The Taita Hills, is also Known as Teita Hills, are a Precambrian mountain range in the south-west of Kenya in Taita-Taveta District, Coastal Province. The hills consist of three huge mounts namely Dabida, Sagalla in the southern side of Voi township and Kasigau in the south near the border of Tanzania. They have an altitude up to 2.208 m above seas level.
The hills are famous for their wet forests with a unique fauna and flora. More than 20 prevalent species of African violets occur solely in that region and known common bird species are the the Taita Falcon, Taita White Eye, Taita Apalis. The amphibian genus Boulengerula found only at the Taita Hills. The Sagala Caecilian which is a seriously endangered worm-like amphibian that also calls the Taita Hills home. The indigenous Taita people live at the edge of the forests and develop the soil which is very productive. The region was heavily logged in the past and the remaining indigenous forest is now part of a nature reserve.
The many ecological zones are as a result of mainly relief, the different climatic conditions in the area which has also influenced land utilization. The plains are used mainly for grazing and sisal cultivation, while the hills, which were once covered by cloud forests, are used for intensive farming. Some remnants of indigenous forests are left on the hills. Most part of the plains is used as game reserves and national parks.
The Taita Hills cover an area of 1000 km2 and they form the northernmost part of the Eastern Arc Mountains. The Taita Hills are isolated from other mountainous areas of east Africa. On the southeast side are the Shimba Hills, towards the south are Pare and Usambara Mountains, on the southwest is Mt. Kilimanjaro with the highest peak in Africa and the highest free standing in the world, in the west are the Ngulia and Chyulu Hills and northwest are the Kenyan highlands separated by the vast plains of Tsavo National Park / Tsavo plains.
Voi, the biggest town in the area with a population 60 000 is found on the plains near the border of eastern section of Tsavo National Park. Wundanyi is another town located the in the area is at the elevation of 1400 m in the hills.
