Nature Kenya

Nature Kenya truly connects people and nature. Nature Kenya also known as the East Africa Natural History Society set up the original Museum in Nairobi. The Partnerships has remained close with the now National Museum Of Kenya (NMK) corroborating for projects such as the annual waterbird counts where NMK gives technical skill while Nature Kenya members collect much of the data. The Journal of East African Natural History and Kenya Birds are published in cooperation by the two bodies.

Kenya’s rich flora and fauna with the assortment of massive range of species that inhabits the country's varied habitats, from its crowded and colourful coral reefs to icy alpine moorland. Around 25,000 species of animals and 7,000 plants have so far been recorded, along with at least 2,000 fungi and bacteria. Most of these organisms are little known and many species have not even been named yet. Their value to Kenya's people, as sources of useful genes, as food or medicine, or as vital parts of ecological systems, has barely been studied.

Kenya's biodiversity is under severe danger. An increasing population is putting relentless strain on the environs and poor people are forced to use resources unsustainably. Natural habitats go on being cleared and converted for farming and residential areas. Land is degraded and water polluted, ecosystems are damaged and their functions impaired.

Nature Kenya is responding to this challenge by

  •     Identifying priorities
  •     Developing partnerships
  •     Advocating appropriate policies
  •     Working with local communities
  •     Monitoring and management
  •     Promoting understanding with publications

Nature Kenya aims at participating in the process of revising production of laws and policies for environmental sustainability, and thus benefits all. At the community level, working with the constituents of eight Important Bird Areas, Nature Kenya works with locals groups known as Site Support Groups (SSGs). Nature Kenya empowers the people become active participants in the preservation of the sites, socioeconomic well being through sustainable use of the natural resources. SSGs have been a significant mechanism delivering protection of resource base at the grassroots, improving the livelihoods by poverty eradication  through diverse income generating activities, increasing awareness to the public including school children, advocacy for the benefit of local communities in government policy and administrative.

Site Support Groups also work with other associates like government agencies, the private sector, donors and non-governmental organisations. Some of theKenya’s SSGs include:

  •     The Friends of Kinangop Plateau (FoKP)
  •    Mukurwe-ini Environmental Volunteers (MEVO)
  •    South Nandi Biodiversity Conservation Group (SONABIC)
  •    Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Guides Association (ASFGA)
  •    Mida Creek Conservation and Awareness Group (MCCAG)
  •    Kereita Environmental Volunteers (KENVO)
  •    Kakamega Environmental Education Programme (KEEP)
  •    Mount Kenya Biodiversity Conservation Group (MKBCG)

Kenya’s Important Bird Areas (IBAs) monitoring framework was developed by Nature Kenya jointly with some 24 government and non-government institutions. The monitoring framework studies the habitat, present management practices, birds and other taxonomic groups to evaluate the conditions of Important Bird Areas.
