Lake Bogoria

Lake Bogoria is found in Lake Bogoria National Reserve is found in Kenya, North of Nakuru. The lake is the heart of an arid landscape, in the shadow of the dramatic walls of the Siracho Range.  Lake Bogoria has no outlet and the intense evaporation has led to high levels of salt and minerals. The soda lake is shallow with a maximum depth of 9 metres and covers an area of 30 sq km. is volcanically active, and the Western shore is lined with spouting geysers and hot springs, spurting steam and bubbling geothermal pools. Fresh water springs at the lake edge attract an abundance of birds and wildlife.

Like other Kenyan soda lakes such as Lake Nakuru, Lake Elementeita, and Lake Magadi. The lake has no fish but is rich in blue-green algae, as a result it attracts one of the largest populations of lesser flamingos.Famous for its geysers and hot springs, the lake has been a National Reserve since 1973 and was designated a Ramsar site in 2001. This means it is an internationally important wetland area, supporting many regionally and nationally endangered species, including the migratory lesser flamingo, the greater flamingo and the black-necked grebe. Up to two million birds can be found there at any one time, many living in the reserve for months at a time. The reserve supports populations of the rare greater kudu antelope and this is one of the best places to see Greater Kudu. The lake shores are always lined with Gazelle, Zebra, Baboons

The geysers and hot springs that feed the Lake Bogoria begin from the Sandai and Emsos rivers. In addition to these inflows there are about 200 alkaline hot springs onshore at Loburu, Chemurkeu, and a southern group Ng'wasis, Koibobei and Losaramat while other springs release straight from the lake floor. Lake Bogoria contains the highest concentration of true geysers in Africa. The Loburu hot springs erupt along the lakeside and are a captivating but also they are dangerous. Due to the extreme temperatures of these boiling springs you need to be careful especially when near them.

Hotel accommodation is available near Loboi village on the north end of the lake while camping is permitted at the southern end of the lake.
