Ministry of Tourism Classification exclusive Porini is Swahili for “in the wild” and Porini camp offers one of Africa’s most authentic camping safaris in one of the wildest destinations in Masai country. Porini is one of the original success stories of Kenya’s burgeoning community conservation movement.Porini Camp is located in the Selenkay conservation area which lies a few miles north of Amboseli national park and is an important dispersal area and rangeland for wildlife migrating out of Amboseli. This area is approximately 100 miles from Nairobi and a 3.5 hour drive mostly on tarmac down the Mombasa Road. The Amboseli airstrip can also be used, with daily flights from Nairobi
The camp is on a 15,000 acre private game reserve within a vast tract of land owned by the Kisonko clan of the Maasai people. It is set up along the lines of the traditional hunting safari bush camp, so there are no permanent structures like a restaurant or swimming pool. It is a real camping experience in the bush, though with a much more comfortable bathroom experience than what was available to the hunters of the olden days. The camp is small and exclusive, accommodating a maximum of 12 guests. The camp is staffed by members of the local Maasai community apart from the management couple who act as the hosts.
