7 Days Mt.Kenya Climb Kamweti Timau Route

The highest mountain peaks of the Mount Kenya  Batain and Nelion can only be climbed by experienced mountaineers and using the right gear. Point Lenana, the third highest summit, can be climbed by anybody provided you are in the right condition for climbing. Although the mountain top can be reached relatively easily, you should be prepared well, not only for varying weather conditions, like cold, snow and rain, but also for problems, like altitude sickness
Climbing Mount Kenya through  "kamweti" route is adventurous starting from Castle Forest Lodge will take you via the dense rainforest, bamboo forest passing the swamps and moorlands to join up with the other routes at McKinders camp for the final climb conquering point Lenana. On the average you will walk 5-6 hours per day. The guides will make a camp in the evening either in the bush or in the neighborhood of a cabin. The "kamweti" route will take you 7 days.

 
Day l Nairobi -Castle Lodge (1500M-2081M)
Leave Nairobi and drive through the central highlands on the way experience the neat subsistence farms of the Kikuyu people to Kimunye shopping center. The next six (6) kms walk is very important for acclimatization pass through a part of the equatorial rain forest. As we edge inner in the forest colobus and sykes monkeys can be seen jumping happily from one branch of a tree to a higher one catching our breath anticipating a miss. As we trek further up we hear the trumpeting and breaking of trees a sure way of announcing that elephant are nearby, buffaloes and waterbucks are seen with ease. Dinner and overnight spent at the grand Castle lodge

Day 2 Castle Lodge- Kamweti (2081 M-2650M)

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle chirping and humming creatures, musical singing of the birds continues through out breakfast. Leave for Kamweti soon after passing through the last part of the equatorial rain forest to the onset of the bamboo terrains. At this level the views are incredible and awesome. Meals and overnight spent at upper Kamweti guesthouse (2650m)

Day 3 Kamweti - Sagana Campsite (2500M-3150M)

Early breakfast and start the ascent for trekking of the 15km.We experience the beautiful virgin bamboo sector marking the beginning of the actual trek. Picnic lunch enroute, dinner and overnight spent at Sagana campsite.

Day 4 Sagana Campsite -Thegu Camp (3150M-4000M)
Begin the steep climb from Sagana on to the delicate moorland. Experience the exhilarating mountain views, crispy air. Enjoy the endemic mountain vegetation that does not grow below 3500m. Short stopover for lunch on the way up, dinner and overnight spent at Thegu camp (3850m)

Days 5 Thegu Camp - Mackinders Camp (4000M-4300M)
After breakfast set off for Mackinder’s camp leaving Thegu camp below. Continue the climb experiencing the peaks covered with glacier ahead. Trek through the next l3kms of higher ground of more and more moorland at a slower rhythmic pace is highly that recommended on this patch. Enjoy lunch and the much anticipated break on the way, dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s camp (4300m)

Day 6 Mackinders Camp- Point Lenana -Majors Camp (4300M-4985M-4000M)
Pre-dawn continental breakfast before setting off for the summit at around 3 a.m. A three hours trekking takes us to point Lenana through Austrian so as to be at the summit at 6.15a.m which call for celebrations.  Take pleasure in the African sunrise on the second highest peak in the continent and a chance to glimpse the highest summit in Africa the Kilimanjaro to the south more than 300 kms away. After this magical experience, start carefully to descend the Austrian now for the proper breakfast before proceeding to Major's camp. Lunch enroute dinner and overnight at the Major's camp (4000m)

Day 7 Majors Camp- Road Head - Nairobi - Nairobi (4000-1500m)
Last breakfast on the African mountain later start descending to Road Head. The three hours walk eventually takes us to the west Marania camp (Road Head) for transfer back.  Lunch at Nanyuki then proceed to Nairobi where the tour ends. Drink plenty of water a day and a night before and at least 4 litres during the expedition.
