Kakamega Forest National Park covers an area of about 240km2, established to protect the only mid altitude tropical rainforest in Kenya. It is a remnant and eastern limit of rainforests of Zaire and West Africa affinities are unique in Kenya and the forest contains many species found nowhere else in the country. The forest lies in the Lake Victoria catchments, about 50km north of Kisumu and West of the Nandi Escarpment forming the edge of the central highlands.
DAY 1 NAIROBI - NAKURU Leave Nairobi driving through the great Rift Valley onto Lake Nakuru National Park for game drive, famous for its millions of flamingos and other birds and animals. It is also famous for its black and white rhinos. Dinner and overnight at Nakuru.
DAY 2 NAKURU-KISUMU
Depart Nakuru after breakfast to Kericho, the land of tea. Take a walk through the plantation, then drive via Lwanda Magere (Luo warrior) who was killed by Kipsigis warrior during their war, died, and turned into a stone some centuries back. Then continue to Kisumu for dinner and overnight.
DAY 3 KISUMU-KAKAMEGA RAIN FOREST After early breakfast, drive to Kaloka beach, boat ride takes you to Ndere Island (the meeting place where Luo great prophets met). Game watching takes you in search of largest crocodiles, swamp antelopes and birds. Row your boat back to Kaloka beach and depart to Kisumu arriving in time for lunch After lunch, drive to Kakamega forest and explore the forest. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 4 KAKAMEGA- SAIWA SWAMP NATIONAL PARK After breakfast, take a short walk through the forest. You will then drive via Webuye to Kitale arriving in time for lunch. Then proceed to Saiwa Swamp National Park for game walk in search of birds and animals such as the Sitatunga antelope, monkeys etc. Please note that because of the size of this park, vehicles are not allowed to enter and this is the reason while you get a game walk and not a game drive. Drive back to Kitale or to Mt. Elgon for dinner and overnight.
DAY 5 MT. ELGON NATIONAL PARK Drive to the park gate then proceed for game walk / drive. Visit the caves Makingeny, Chepnyali, Ngwarisha and Kitum (the place for ceremonies ) 200m into the mountain. This unspoilt game reserve is the home of about 300 elephants, buffalos, leopard, giant forest hog, colobus monkeys etc.
DAY 6 MT. ELGON - NAIROBI Those who want to climb can be left to climb to Koitobos, the highest peak on Kenyan side about 4,200m. After breakfast, you will drive to Nairobi passing through Eldoret town where you will stop to have your lunch.
